Today Is a New Day (2022)

By Magdalen Chua and Ryotaro Hoshino

An installation of paper sculptures, photographs, drawings, picture frames, and painted found objects

Presented at Fragile Structures curated by Teodora Konstantinova at Dom na kinoto (Cinema House), Sofia on 30 October 2022.

Assembled in loosely connected islands in a public gallery of a downtown film theatre, the pieces of Today Is a New Day were developed largely in response to the landscape and nature in the village of Tsarimir, Bulgaria, with its open skies and mountains, walnut trees, grape vines, and wildflowers. We began by making photographs, drawings, and sculptures to explore our individual interests in ways of framing and transforming the flatness of paper. Alongside antique picture frames as well as painted stones and sticks, the objects were brought together in a visual dialogue of colour, motifs, and shapes, intermingling with the sofas, armchairs, coffee tables, and other furniture at Dom na kinoto. With the documentation of the installation handed over to viewers of the exhibition, their perspective of the show forms the work that remains.

Today Is a New Day was developed during the IMAGO residency founded by the art historians and curators Radoslav Mehandzhiyski and Teodora Konstantinova.
